I recently brought some flower seeds, but forgot to buy the seed trays. So I improvised and did what my grandad always does and used toilet paper rolls cut in half and placed them in a foil tray that I normally use for freezing meals in.
Also I don’t have a greenhouse but saw the idea to use a empty strawberry container here. But unfortunately I had just thrown mine out the day before. So instead I placed them inside a plastic storage container that I use as a sandbox for my kids.

My little seedlings are growing and look great!!

Hopefully they will flower at beginning of September
fingers crossed

15 Comments on Using Toilet Paper Rolls as Seedlings Trays

  1. You can plant the seedlings when they are bigger ,straight into the ground still in the toilet rolls as the rolls compost into the ground and they will still give the seedlings extra support until they do. If you only put the rolls 2 thirds into the ground and cover with perforated cling film over the top it provides a mini greenhouse and keeps slugs off

  2. Years ago, I used the same method to grow my weed seeds. it was cool! Then, when the plants were ready to go into the bigger pots, I would gently break the bottoms of the rolls so that the roots could splay out. A recommended way of doing things!
