The first
day of school is probably one of the most important days of your child’s life
and preparing them for that day is really important. You want to make sure your
child isn’t scared and overwhelmed by the new situation. You want your child to
be able to make friends and not be left out. And also you want your child be able
to participate in learning. So you want to help prepare them for this, but don’t
worry if you haven’t done anything yet as there are a few weeks before the new
school year and that’s plenty of time to help them get ready.
One of the
very first things you can do it talk to your child. Ask them what they are
looking forward to about school and what they are worried about. Also get a
book about ‘going to school’. These can be really helpful and you can talk with
your child about the story.
Having
themed play weeks through the summer is fantastic, as children always learn
through play. Here are some ideas for different themes:
- Rainbow week
- Zoo week
- Dinosaur week
- Food week
- Nature week
- Sports week
I have
already done a dinosaur theme week with my children (7, 2 & 1 years) and
they loved it See it here
And I’m
halfway through doing our Zoo week which I will post about soon - here are the Paper Plate lions we made
Try to help
your child learn their colours by going on colour scavenger hunts around the
house or garden. I also made a sensory tub with yellow items in to keep the kids quiet one day when I was busy, but since I have also used this to hide the items around the room and have my two youngest find all the yellow items and put them back in the tub. I have also done this with red and blue and it's really helping them learn their colours
I also made
some first words which are great for helping your child start to read and recognise
words see here
