Meningitis - Would You Know If Your Child Had It?

17-23rd September is Meningitis Awareness Week

Meningitis can be a fatal disease and is also a disease that strikes fast. So knowing the symptoms and what to look out for is something every parent should know

The main symptoms are:
Severe Headache
Stiff neck
Dislike of bright lights
vomiting
Very sleepy or hard to wake
Confused or delirious
Fits
Rash

Symptoms can be slightly different in babies and toddlers
Symptoms are those above along with these:
Refusing to eat or feed
irritable, not wanting to be held or touched
a stiff body or floppy, unable to stand
high pitch moaning

If your child has these symptoms go to your nearest hospital straight away!

The rash is usually the last symptom to appear
The rash is different to other rashes as when you place a glass over it, it won't fade

Watch this video for more information and how to preform the glass test

If you think your child may have meningitis, don't wait around, go straight to your nearest emergency room. If they haven't got a rash, don't wait for it to appear. Your child may not have meningitis, but it's always best to be safe then sorry. And remember meningitis can kill a child within hours

  3. Great and very useful post!

I would like to add that some kinds of meningitis are very hard to detect - a family member had a rare fungal kind that it took three trips to the ER to diagnose properly and the patient almost didn't survive by the time it was figured out. It just happened that a doctor who'd been to a seminar spotted the chart and was able to figure it out.

Parents know their children better than anyone, and if your gut is telling you something different from what the doctors are saying, this is the time to be pushy and INSIST that they check, check and recheck.

  5. This word always scares me. I think because I get migraines where light bothers me and I suffer from horrible neck pain alot from my spine. It makes me paranoid. It is so helpful to know the symptoms here though and am glad you are promoting awareness of such an important topic.

Found you over on the super sunday sync. Wishing you the best and looking forward to following. = )

  6. Stopping by with the Kid Lit Blog Hop! Meningitis is a very serious subject, so I hate to be lighthearted, but I just watched Contagion last night, and it sounds very similar. Scary!

In all seriousness, a fellow student at Indiana University contracted meningitis and passed away when I was there. It was awful. Thank you for getting this information out to all of us.

  7. My nephew was hospitalized with bacterial meningitis at age 1, signs were fever, cranky - assumed he was teething. Then he had a seizure, so right to ER. A long, difficult recovery is still going on. My son came home with a bad headache (not a headache sufferer) but he was old enough to communicate that the room was spinning - very dizzy to the point of not holding head up. First spinal tap was negative, and was told probably something like rocky mountain spotted fever. But I told them - momma knows her own child. So, they let us stay while giving pain meds and did another tap an hour later - diagnosed with meningitis and admitted on the hospital.

  10. A child I know, contracted spinal meningitis at a year old. It caused him to have a stroke. He was paralyzed on one side, his speech was deeply affected, and his IQ took a sharp hit. It was special ed from there on out for him. He regained the use of his paralyzed side, but had to learn sign language so his family could understand him. Now, he's 24. He's able to work in a limited sense, but is able to be social. It damaged his life intensely. There's no telling what he could have become. He was a beautiful baby. I am so glad you're warning parents about this. Don't let doctors turn you away, demand answers and treatment for your child. This is when beign assertive is so crucial--you never know when you won't have a second chance to stand up for your child. Very scary stuff! Thanks for linking in to the Kid Lit Blog Hop, and providing a very valuable service--information!
